I installed the plugins but the tonido symbol on the statusbar is greyed out. in the option section i tried xxxx.tonido.com (with and without leading http://) and the standard portnumber (10001)

The address should be

yourid.tonidoid.com (I notice you have xxx.tonido.com instead of tonidoid.com).
you can enter your IP instead of the name as well.

The port must be the port used by your tonido instance. If you are using relay, then enter port 80 in there.

Thanks

When i mouse over the tonido symbol it says: unable to connect to server http://myid.tonidoid.com:10001.

But when i type http://myid.tonidoid.com:10001 in a webbrowser i have no problem getting a connection.

I am having the same issue. In my case I am running the Tonido Software on Sheevaplug. I have tried the plugin on windows XP w/ Firefox 3.5.5 and also on Mac 10.6.2 w/ Firefox 3.5.5 and it doesn't work on either one.

I followed the instructions in this thread and was able to get it working.

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=495&start=10#wrapheader

The key is that I had to use port 80 since I have relay working. Plus I had to login once manually for the plugin to collect the information and then the plugin takes a min after that to start working.

Ok, I finally found out why i could not get the plugin to work.
You need to have the Firefox option 'allow 3rd party cookies' enabled.
Maybe you can add this information to the instructions.

Is it correct that when you close firefox and start it again, you have to first login again on the plug before the symbol turns amber?

Yep. At this point FF plugin does not store password and therefore, needs the browser to be authenticated before it can call into Tonido. So it will complain if Tonido is not authenticated and will open the login page for you to authenticate once. As long as the browser is open, you can now access all the plugin shortcuts etc.
