smart sync of large file

Postby dongadoy » Tue Oct 04, 2011 9:24 am

Does Tonido Sync handle large files more efficiently by transferring only the part of the file that has changed? For example, if there's a 50MB log file on both computers, and one computer appends some text to the file, will Sync only transfer the end of the file to the other computer? How about a 50MB database file where the change is a 1KB block somewhere within the file rather than at the end, will Sync only transfer the 1K block to the other computer?

Just curious. We don't want to sync large frequently modified files if the whole file needs to be transferred each time. Or maybe we do; but we need to know that it will need a lot of bandwidth.

This change is in development. We have plans to add only modified block sync.

Currently Tonido Sync is smart enough to resume downloads from the point it stopped so that large files are downloaded efficiently.

However, if you are syncing really large files that change frequently, Tonido sync is not going to be that efficient.
