Difference between Software and Plug

Postby tanjun » Thu Feb 04, 2010 12:44 am

What's the difference between the software and the plug?

I saw this post

and it makes mention of the profile and it's location(s). To that end...

I had profile 'A' on the plug and have profile 'B' on/through the windows software.

Questions:
1. Does the software need the plug? Is the plug the 'access' point for remote access? Does it do anything else other than remote access?
2. Is it better to have the profiles on the plug or on a windows/software machine?
3. I transfered profile 'A' to the windows machine, can I now just delete the superfluous profile from the plug? Is that all I have to delete to erase that 'old' profile?
4. Can a static IP be given to the plug?
5. If I place the profiles on the plug, would my access address always be http://[username].tonidoid.com?
6. I installed the SSL license on the windows machine. Can that be transfered to the plug if the profiles are moved over as well?

Thanks for any comments.

Great! Thanks for a quick reply to ALL the questions.

So, the plug is only necessary if the intended purpose of the plug is to be a standalone device, correct? This would (possibly) allow for the plug to be isolated on the network and also free up resources on any local host(ing) machine, correct?

Are there any other 'major' advantages/disadvantages to running solely through the plug?

As you had said, you can let the Plug run 24/7 without affecting your other computer resources. In addition, TonidoPlug comes with a WebsharePro. As WebsharePro is a paid application, the free Tonido version does not come with it. However, you can just purchase the App to run it on your free Tonido version.

.... and a plug consumes just 3 watt of electrical power. A lot less then your pc running Tonido.

OK...

By sending me that link are you trying to say that I can not purchase just the WebSharePro as in the past? I really do not want a subscription.

On the plug, you don't need to buy WebsharePro. It is included. There is nothing to buy.

On the software, we don't sell WebsharePro anymore, just TonidoPro.

Yikes! That's very disappointing. I used to recommend the Tonido software routinely and people were grateful for it. Now they'd have to consider a $30 to $50 annual fee. That's a "tough sell" for the way most of us use the software.

Thanks for clarifying.
