TonidoPlug2 console access?

Postby Materdaddy » Thu Oct 20, 2011 2:37 pm

My TonidoPlug2 just arrived and I noticed there is a little 4-pin header under a rubber cover opposite the hard drive. Is this TTL level console access that we can use by simply throwing on an FTDI adapter? If so, what is the pin-out? It looks as though there is a 5 connector section on the PCB, although there are only 4 which have accessible pins.

Can we access uBoot from the console?

Yes, potentially you can. You need a serial adapter for that.
If we see enough demand, we will be selling it in our stores.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I have TTL to RS232 adapters. What is the pin-out, and baud rate?

Well, I was able to SSH in and see that the baud rate is 115200 on ttyS0, but I still am not getting anything. I think the pin-out is all I should need to get this working.

Got it working. Pin-out is as follows:

"Top" of TonidoPlug2
VCC
RX
TX
GND
NC (This is the unpopulated pin)
"Bottom" of TonidoPlug2

"top" is where the power connection is, "bottom" is where the USB and Ethernet ports are.

To answer that last question, the answer is ues. CTRL+C at boot interrupts the automatic boot and the Marvell uBoot can be accessed.

There are many places to buy them. I have them laying around the office (embedded systems linux device driver engineer), but they're readily available all over the place. The most popular is the FTDI chip set and they can all be had for between $10 and $20.

Would this adapter work (after connecting the proper pins of course)

If so, I might be able to unbrick :)

No, the adapter you linked is a USB to Serial adapter. What you need is a TTL to RS232 adapter.

If the computer you're using to access the console does not have an actual serial port, you will also need the USB to Serial adapter you mentioned.

If you attach the serial portion of the USB to Serial dongle directly to your tonido plug, you risk damaging it. RS232 voltages range from +-3V to +-15V which would come out of the USB to RS232 adapter. The TTL level voltage on the tonidoplug is going to be around 3.3V-5V, which requires a TTL to RS232 converter like this: http://www.ecrater.com/p/1750384/max232 ... tl-adapter
