Installing ProFTPD on TonidoPlug

ProFTPD is a robust, powerful FTP daemon that works wonderfully on the TonidoPlug.

1. SSH into your plug:

$ ssh root@<ipaddress>

2. “Fix” apt-get:

# mkdir -p /var/cache/apt/archives/partial

3. Install proftpd:

# apt-get install proftpd

During installation, choose standalone server type. This will keep things easier to manage.

4. Enable root login: Open the /etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf file in your favorite editor (I use joe), and add the following lines to the end of the file:

RootLogin on
RequireValidShell off
UseFtpUsers off
AllowForeignAddress on

Save the file, and restart ProFTPD with

# /etc/init.d/proftpd restart

and you should be good to login as root within your local network.

5. (Optional–for external access) Forward port 21. Note that this will only let active-transfer mode work, passive will not work behind a router unless all etheral ports are forwarded. Make sure you set a strong password, as anyone will be able to connect to your plug.

That’s all there is for a single-user (root) install. You can now log into the TonidoPlug via an FTP client with the root username and password, and enjoy easy file transfers.
