To access the Tonidoplug's USB drives most efficiently from within a LAN, the support topic at http://www.tonido.com/help/Index.htm?context=720 advises:

"Type smb://192.168.1.xx/ (your TonidoPlug's IP address) in your Finder -> Connect to Server dialog"

Done that, but I get the error message "There is a problem connecting to the server '192.168.1.xx'. The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.' "

Any suggestions on what's going wrong?

Thanks,

Are your plug HDD mounted? If you open your plug admin and go to the disks tab, make sure all your plugs are mounted and available on the network.

Yes, it's mounted as disk1part1. But I see there is a share button as well - do I need to share the disk, and if so, how do I control access?

Update - I've now tried the 'share' button, but pressing it comes up with "error getting share information". Then if I try to share the drive, it gives me "error creating share".

You should not be seeing the "error getting share information", when you click the share button.
This usually means the samba configuration file is corrupted.
Try this
1) Remove the disk
2) Remove the file /etc/samba/smb.conf
3) Reconnect the disk
4) Now click on the share button. It should not get the error and also you should see the details about your disk share. At that point, your should be able to access the share from Mac.

Thanks - will try that. Have just separately posted the samba configuration problem, which is reported when I do "apt-get update" (will remove post). Thanks for the help.

Done that, but no improvement. Here's what apt-get upgrade produces:

Code:
root@TonidoPlug2:/etc/samba# apt-get upgrade

Warning:
We don't support the rootfs if you do an OS upgrade on the plug. The scripts are designed specific for the default OS release. If you already did an upgrade or update, that could have broken the admin scripts.

Having said that, create a dummy file called smb.conf and then retry.

Creating the dummy /etc/samba/smb.conf did the trick - it's sharing fine now. Thanks for the help.

BTW, are you saying I shouldn't upgrade the OS? What therefore happens about security upgrades? Is there an auto update in operation?

Regards
