Hi,

I am just trying to gauge the best method of backing up 700GB of data remotely to another site over an ADSL connection using Tonido.

My plan is to save all the data initially on a 1TB HDD and take it to the remote site and upload the data to the Tonido backup folder. This will save trying to upload 700GB over the internet.

I am assuming Tonido will then be able to see that the data already exists in the remote folder and then only update the changes. Is this correct or is there a better method of doing what I am trying to achieve?

Many thanks in adavance....

Duke

Unfortunately, with the current implementation, the detection of the remote data match is present in the source side. So, Tonido will have to do one back atleast and then does incremental backups on the changed file or portion of a file.

Thanks rydgaze, that's sad! :|

Do you know if there are plans for this to be implemented as a feature in the future?

isn't it possible to just do a tonido backup run in your local source backup instead of simply copying the data initially?
I think you will have to fiddle around with the hostnames so that the target of the initial run in the local network looks like the remote target.

Hi enwor,

Can you please elaborate on what you mean?

Thanks

Hi duke,

I mean the following:
You connect your backup HDD to your tonido server at home and configure tonido to make an initial backup to this location.
After that you will have a valid tonido backup on this hdd.
Now you can carrie the hdd to its new location and set it up.
After all, you have a hdd at the remote location with an initial tonido backup on it.
I think it should be possible now, to adjust the existing backup configuration within tonido, to save to this new location.
Maybe tonido isn't able to adjust the configuration of a backup once made (but this could be clarified by the admins here). If this is the case, it would be possible, that you temporarily configure your home server, that he "thinks" he backups to the remote location (e.x. by putting the dynamic dns name as a fixed local mapping into your /etc/hosts), so that there is now change (in the point of view from tonido) when relocation the hdd to the remote location.

The downside is, that you need a deeper insight on the linux and networking part.

regards
