How to install calibre so one can use the calibre-server to share e-books.

The following steps are needed:

SSH (Putty) into Tonido:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install vnc-server icewm icewm-gnome icewm-themes
apt-get install synaptic
vnc-server

<Now you need to specify the password twice and select if you want a hidden password>

vnc-server

<you get the name of the server: for me: Tonidoplug2:2>

On your PC use TightVNC Viewer to open an VNC session.

Select Debian - Programs - Applications - System - Package management - Synaptic Package Manager

Use Search to locate Calibre and install Calibre.

After that go back to SSH (Putty).
apt-get install python-routes

<Now it is time to connect the Calibre lib>
calibre-server -p 9099 --daemonize --with-library="/media/disk7part2/Fantasy-Ebooks"

And now you can connect to this library from your ipad or using your browser.

Adding ebooks to the database can be done by the command line option calibredb.

http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/cli/calibredb.html

I haven't tried this yet.

If it is possible to start calibre in the vnc box is something i will try and report back.

Tried calibre in a vnc box, this doesn't work. Then started calibre from putty, got the message that it could not find an active x windows.

I know from a friend that it works when one has an x windows interface.

To use X-windows outside Linux you have to install some software on your desktop/laptop:

OSX: X11 (usually comes with OSX but also downloadable from Apple)
-> works pretty well with your tonidoplug2

Windows: Xming - http://www.straightrunning.com/XmingNotes/
-> should work, my very limited experience is with the frre public domain release and outdated. Give it a try! :P

... and tell us if it works!

Ok, i installed xming under w7. Then i didn,t know how to get it started. In putty, in the first config screen, there are some tabs. The tab x11 needs to be expanded and x11 needs to be activated. In the parameter field -Y in capitals needs to be specified.

Now start putty and activate synaptic or calibre. A window on the desktop W7 will appear. So no vnc needed. Cool.

The calibre version is 0.7.7 and doesn't have the option to switch libraries. So now i am going to search for an install script for calibre 0.8.xx.

If anyone has info please post it.

http://packages.debian.org/sid/armel/calibre-bin/download

However:
This is Debian SID not SQUEEZE!!

It will work, but I cannot guarantee that other programs will work after installing the latest and greatest Calibre. :ugeek:

Use it on a separate USB-stick!

Ok I installed the new calibre from the debian sid on top off the old one. That does't work :( . Will have to start over and try a clean install.

You should have used:

apt-get remove --purge calibre

first!

A clean install will do the trick as well

It just takes somewhat longer. ;)
