[This is obvious - and I am sure many people are doing it - but I can't find any reference to it so I thought I would post about it.]

It is quite possible to use the TonidoPlug2, with its built in software suite, alongside OwnCloud. This gives you the nice interface of the TonidoPlug2, plus the rather nice Tonido iPhone app with all it does, to access files uploaded and synced from multiple computers using the OwnCloud client (available for Win/Mac/Linux)

Apart from free, unlimited syncing, OwnCloud gives you other goodies too - caldav and carddav syncing (carddav is a bit flaky at present), and also multi-user support, so you can set up several OwnCloud accounts, assign people 50Gig of space or whatever, then let them sync/share files/folders with each other, all within the server - like dropbox. (There is an encryption feature too - I have not tried it yet - and not sure how well it works with their iPhone app.)

Using OwnClouds own iPhone app lets multiple people access their own files while on the move - but the OwnCloud iPhone app is functional but very basic. If the server is for personal use, you may as well use the Tonido iPhone app (I assume there is one for Android as well - not checked) - just use the TonidoPlug2 web-interface to find the data directory of owncloud and make it a "favourite" so you can jump straight to it. It will appear as a favourite in the iPhone app too. Then just upload and download as normal.

You can set it up a directory accessible within owncloud as a media server in the Tonido web interface - or whatever.

I used owncloud 4.07 on lighttpd and sqlite on my TonidoPlug2, booting of a SATA disk. It isn't brilliantly fast, but it works well enough. There are no major gotchas. If you get your domain name from somewhere like Joker (and other places I don't doubt) then you can set up dynamic dns with out much trouble.

I am sure this setup could be improved on - but it does what I want - lets me drop DropBox, and, I hope, when carddav is more reliable, iCloud.

I have not tried any truly vast files - data is passed up using POST i think, so one has to set some quite high values in the php.ini - but it was happy enough with a 500meg avi.

As a final note - I have no great objection to giving Tonido my money, but I am not terribly keen on the 50Gig cap/ annual fee (is that correct?) for syncing they have in place now...

kind regards from sunny Fukuoka.

The Tonido Cloud solution for SMBs is now available with unlimited sync.

Will this solution also function with ntfs partitions?

Hi,

I also installed owncloud on my tonido plug. Here I like calendar and address handling (caldav).
For file sync I use rsync via ssh tunnel.

Ownclouds file and image browsing is slower than tonido.

BTW ownclouds csync can be used without owncloud.

Regards,
