BTW bradley4681 thanks for all your help :D

I have another question, what's the best way to access the Transmission remotely - as for the regular torrent app I use Tonido's relay service, how do you access Trnasmission remotely?

i have it setup in the config file to ask for a password to get to the web interface, i then forward port 8080 from my router to the port transmission uses. i then just access my public ip or cable modem ip from outside my house, so i can add shows anytime and where.

router setup example
8080 to internel plug ip "192.168.1.200:9091"

so externally i would access the following as an example
http://71.24.73.101:8080
at this point i would be asked for my username and password

you could also setup dyndns so that you could just go to for an example
"mytorrent.dyndns.com:8080"
a lot of linksys routers let you setup dyndns in the config

Pretty much exactly as I thought. I actually have a Netgear router which does have the option for DynDNS and that's what I will use. BTW which Transmission version are you currently running? How difficult is the update?

i think i'm running 2.13 which is what I wrote these instructions on, i haven't updated since the install. i'm a don't fix it if it ain't broke kinda guy. i configured the plug and transmission so i could put it all in a closet and forget it.

updating would require downloading the new source and compiling

I encounter an error 'file exists' when running the symlink command. I currently manually update the settings file in /etc/ do you know how I can fix that? Also, I have a problem where once I start a download, I get a 'permission denied' message. :(

you need to check the permissions on the folders transmission runs from and downloads too. normally you wouldn't set a folder like this but since this isn't a critical device running financial software i just set the perms to 777

Hi,

is it possible to install Transmission on the actual plug? I have tried countless times to boot off my HDD to no avail and gave up long ago. I am aware that this will void support/warranty but I've had the plug for over 18 months now so it doesn't matter to me

I guess my question should be more something like: can you set any folder to host torrents? i.e. folder on my HDD and not the plug

Cheers

you can set an folder to host torrents or the watch list. you just change the folder paths in the torrent config file. Also what type of USB thumb drive are you using? i've noticed i had to use a 4GB one for it to work and if i was going through a hub it didn't always work. it also usually had to be the only usb drive connected.

Thanks for your response bradley4681. I have a 1TB disk attached to my plug, no hub so fingers crossed it should work.

I will give this a try tonight and will report my success/failure here.

Cheers
