I've noticed a number of posts lately about the Tonido Plug 1 and problems updating or retrieving new packages.

Ubuntu no longer supports the ARM v5 processors. The Ubuntu Jaunty ARM repositories have been shut down.

This is NOT a problem for the newer plug (v2). It runs Debian Squeeze, which is well maintained with loads of current packages.


How do you know if you have a plug v1 or v2?
Look at http://www.tonido.com. The pic on the home page is a plug v2. Everything else is a plug v1.

What does this mean? (see update below)
- Running "apt-get" anything will give you an error: there's no place to retrieve the packages from.
- You cannot install new packages on the Plug v1 using apt-get install.
- If it is not already on your plug, you can't get it using apt-get.

Solutions:
There is not an Ubuntu fix and there is not a Tonido fix. Ubuntu is done with ARM v5 and the Tonido folks are not releasing a new image for the Plug v1.

If you want to install or update packages, your best bet is another distro, such as Arch Linux. viewtopic.php?f=37&t=605&start=10

OR, you can compile them yourself, either on the plug or using a cross compiler.

UPDATE 1: (thanks to mercado)
Old Ubuntu packages ARE still accessible by changing the sources list:
# nano /etc/apt/sources.list:
- change http://ports.ubuntu.com to http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

This fix will allow you to install packages using apt-get install. The 'old-releases' repository may not be the most current versions of the packages.

Do you know the reason behind this decision. I mean is it: technically not possible / too much work / commercially not interesting / plug capability not sufficient / any other reason?

No, I don't know, but the Tonido folks have indicated on other threads that with limited resources, they would rather focus on the new hardware. That does not stop anyone else from building a new image. But, since the Tonido software runs on Arch Linux, it may not be worth the effort.

I was able to install new packages by editing /etc/apt/sources.list:
- change http://ports.ubuntu.com to http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

Not sure if this is a long-term fix, or if this repository will eventually get deleted as well.

I think these packages stay as is, they won't be updated, so security issues might not be corrected

Maybe I too much of a novice but why should I care? Is not the software provided by Tonido enough or not?

It only matters if you have a plug v1 AND you care about getting updates, including security patches, to the Linux operating system underneath the Tonido software. Some people don't. If it isn't an issue for you, don't worry about it.

can the plug 1 be updated to debian version used by plug 2?

It can run Debian, but not using the Plug 2 package provided by Tonido - different hardware. You'll have to search around on the internet for a Debian package for a Sheeva Plug..

That would probably break the apps that tonido supplies i guess.
I wonder if Tonido is going to continue to support the first plug ?
