Hi,

I have formatted (ext3) and encrypted a USB pen-drive via the disk utility in Ubuntu (10.04) on my desktop PC. On the desktop, I can mount and access it fine via the GUI and seemingly via the terminal too.

However, when I SSH into the Tonido plug and use the same commands (sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdc1 bobby) things aren't working: I enter the password when asked (nothing happens after this so I don't know whether it has been accepted, but the mount command returns an error.

If I log in to the Tonido Plug admin page having decrypted (or not..?) the drive it still shows up as an unrecognised format and won't let me mount it.

Can anyone tell me what command to use to decrypt and mount the drive if the drive is on /dev/sdc1 and the partition name is "bobby"?

Thanks in advance.

Plug may not have all the apps/modules that are on the Ubuntu Desktop. If they are not there, then they would have to be installed.

And, only make changes to your plug if you are booting off the USB, modifying the flash OS is not supported.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I eventually solved this on my own and the issue was not a missing package on the plug. It would be great if future versions of the software could include this feature - I don't think it would be hard to implement.

For reference, this is how I did it:

1. Using Disk Utility in Ubuntu 10.04 format a USB pen drive as ext3 and create an encrypted partitioned with a name of your choice (eg 'bobby'). If you use Windows or Mac I am not sure how you do this, but you could always make a usb stick version of Ubuntu (see penddrivelinux.com), boot from that and make the encrypted pen drive as above.

2. Load the pen drive into the plug and log into tonido admin via the browser on your pc. Go to the Disks page and make a note of the location of the disk (eg /dev/sda1) and the plug's IP address (eg 192.168.1.70).

3. Open a terminal in Ubuntu (or Putty on the PC perhaps?) and type the following (obviously substitute my details with your own):

ssh root@192.168.1.70
(the first time you do this follow any prompts, then enter your plug admin
password.)
sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda1 bobby
(enter password that you used to encrypt the usb pen drive).

4. Go back to Disks on the plug admin page and refresh the list of available drives. You will now see a second drive, which is your unencrypted partitione on the usb pen drive. Select this and then type your preferred path (eg /media/disk2part1) in the mount box and click the mount button.

5. Click on the share button to create a share for the disk, as you would with an unencrypted disk. This will give you a link that you can use to access the disk.

If the plug is reset you will have to repeat steps 2 to 5. There is probably a way to make it permanent but I haven't yet got the skills to do this.
