Problem: e2fsck fails on external USB drive

Steps to reproduce:
1. Take new drive and insert in external USB enclosure
2. Format from Tonido web console
3. Run
Code:
e2fsck /dev/sdb
(which is the new device)

Result:
Code:
e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
e2fsck: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem.  If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

Trying the suggested alternate superblock doesn't work either.

Other information:
I have run badblocks on the drive - no badblocks reported.

How did you get sdb.
Are you using an USB hub to connect multiple HDDs or you have sata and an USB.

Also please post the output of the command:
Quote:
fdisk -l

I have two identical hard drives, one in the internal SATA enclosure, and one in a USB connected case.

The output of fdisk -l looks like this:

Quote:

Based on your screen output, your command should be
Code:
  # e2fsck /dev/sdb1

Thanks. I had assumed I needed to run it on the whole volume, not just the partition.
