I'm simply expressing my displeasure at seeing an attorney display a TonidoPlug with the label ripped off on the national news last week, as an example, in his efforts to create a product already created by CodeLathe, with no mention of what a TonidoPlug is and can already do. There was however a picture of a Guru Plug in the same broadcast with its labeling intact. If you watch this clip you will see that even the newscaster has not been informed by this attorney that these products already exist.

A casual viewer of this broadcast is left believing that this lawyer is championing the effort to invent the readily available TonidoPlug. I believe he could have worded his presentation differently and had given TonidoPlug proper credit.

Hey Doug,
Thanks for the laugh of the day. :) I thought this was a cut scene from Hackers for a minute.
I guess when the 'internet gets cut off', he's expecting everyone in the apartment building to fire up their plug and communicate.
Then I guess we get some extension cords and daisy chain them across the atlantic :-P

It was the Freedom Box project that led me to Tonido. Freedom Box has a lot of laudable goals but to the average guy like me the main difference seems to be the incorporation of a WiFi mesh capability in the event that the internet goes down or is unsafe to use. I think it was the P2P Foundation's site that listed Tonido as "like Freedom Box but available today." Congrats to Tonido!

I have been monitoring the Freedom Box developers mailing list - lots of good ideas but it seems to be one of those herding cats things. Security is, needless to say, high on the list of goals.

I've tried to put my meager skills to figuring out how to set up a internet-independent local mesh network but no luck so far. That's not a Tonido issue, it's my skills. However, I'd think that being able to simply ad hoc WiFi net neighborhood Tonidos would be useful, sort of like the Village Telco Mesh Potato project.

For anyone interested in Freedom Box their site is http://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/ and the goals are at http://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/goals/index.en.html

You can also get a better sense of Eben Moglen via the other videos at the site. CBS can make anything look weird.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm just partial to TonidoPlug and when I saw that broadcast it made me feel that Mr. Moglen was perhaps impeding on TonidoPlugs proven performance. Unless I'm mistaken no other product can match TonidoPlugs user friendly and proven performance combined with all the apps included right out of the box. Yes, it is true that if you are a Linux guru you can purchase another brand "empty" box for the same price and "do it up" to suit your individual needs, but I think TonidoPlug is geared more toward the general population. I have seen other guru members here turn a TonidoPlug into a "SuperTonidoid" which is awesome.
Codelathe, staff and contributors, keep up the great work you all do as I and bunches of others depend on your product in our everyday use.

The most recent Freedom Box mailing list item (Freedombox-discuss Digest, Vol 11, Issue 54) has a critique of Tonido by a Tonido user. Competition makes things better and I'd hope that the Codelathe folks are monitoring the Freedom Box development discussions. Of course, right now Freedom Box is just an idea, reality could be quite different.
