Hello - I love your software but was wondering if I can use it with a different NAS drive than the Plug and Freecom. eg Buffalo, QNAP or Netgear.

Thanks

I believe there is a Netgear community created Tonido add-on. You can take a look at that. Tonido is not available on other NASes at this time.

I actually wanted to create a module (add-on) for Thecus NAS devices but immediately stopped after reading through the TOS (after I found it packaged in the resources package - it should really be placed somewhere one will find it or even on the Tonido homepage with the documentation for example) - here is why:

Quote:
License: Subject to Your acceptance of the TOS, CodeLathe hereby grants You a personal, non-exclusive, non-sublicensable, non-assignable license to download, install and use Tonido on Your computer for the sole purpose of using the services and products provided by Tonido (the “License”). This license doesn’t apply to embedded hardware devices such as NAS drives, Smart Routers and setup boxes which are not Tonido branded devices. Your TonidoPlug comes pre-installed with Tonido software.

The TOS actually seems to forbid installation on NAS devices that are not Tonido branded .... I wonder if the TOS has changed after the ReadyNAS addon has been created or if there is a way to get explicit permission to create and distribute (freely provide them for download) such modules. The last thing I want is to get forced into a law suit ;o)

Update #1:

Even redistribution is not allowed but at least there may be a way to get permission:

Quote:
Distribution: You are not allowed to distribute the Tonido software without the express written consent of an authorized officer of CodeLathe. If You want to make use of the possibility to distribute Tonido software, send an email containing Your name, address, phone number and email address to support@codelathe.com, stating Your intentions to distribute the Tonido Software and defining the applicable media. Tonido reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to deny any or all requests to distribute.

Update #2:

Finaly, modifications are disallowed as well - there may be modifications required to the start/stop scripts since most NAS devices ship with a stripped down Linux OS.

Quote:
No Modifications: You will not undertake, cause, permit or authorize the modification, creation of derivative works, translation, reverse engineering, decompiling, disassembling or hacking of Tonido or any part thereof except to the extent permitted by law.

We actually license Tonido software for Embedded and NAS products and that's why those clauses exist. Please send us an email to support@codelathe.com and we can give you explicit permission for this NAS device. We have no problems with you making this addon.

Thank you, I sent an email earlier today to the support address. Tried the same with CrashPlan who have a similar TOS but got a "no go" so I expected the worst here too ;o) Good to see that companies are interested in having their products used.

Did you get approval to convert this to Thecus? I am very interested in that. Sadly, I am not a developer, but I can be a good tester if you need one.
